  • EPA-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway
  • Available 365-hp, twin-turbocharged V-6 engine

The 2017 Ford Explorer is a popular, full-size SUV that seats 6 or 7 passengers across 3 rows. It competes with the Mazda CX-9, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Pathfinder. Five trims are available: the base model, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum.

Last year, the Explorer received a mid-cycle facelift, which included squared-off LED headlights, c-shaped moldings on the front fascia, and a new mesh-pattern grille. The XLT trim has a newly available Sport Appearance Package, which includes Magnetic Gray exterior accents, a black clad trim, and unique 20-inch wheels. LED headlights, a power moonroof, power side mirrors, and a dual-pipe exhaust system come standard. Available features include LED fog lights heated side mirrors, a power liftgate, and a trailer hitch receiver.

The Explorer is powered by a standard 290-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and front- (FWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). The V-6/FWD model earned an EPA-estimated 17/24/mpg city/highway. With 4WD, it dips slightly to a 16/23 mpg rating. A 280-hp, turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder and more powerful 365-hp, twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 are also available.

Inside, the Explorer features a 60/40 split-folding second row bench seat and a 50/50 split-folding third row bench seat. Maximum cargo capacity is 81.7 cubic feet with the seats folded down. For a more comfortable ride, second row captain’s chairs are optional. The center console features the standard SYNC audio system. It can be upgraded to the SYNC 3 multimedia system, which includes a touchscreen, an integrated navigation system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Siri Eyes Free voice recognition, dual USB ports, satellite radio, and adaptive cruise control. Standard features include a rear HVAC, remote keyless entry, and cruise control. Dual-zone climate control, a memory seat, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, leather/suede upholstery, front ventilated seats, and a Sony premium audio system are available.

Standard safety features include a backup camera and a tire pressure monitoring system. Available features include a blind spot warning system, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, sport-tuned suspension, hill descent control, hill start assist, and trailer sway control.
